No school — Monday, 9/7 — Labor Day

Dear Rancho Parents and Staff,

We are aware of an encampment of unhoused individuals near our elementary school and understand that its presence has caused discomfort for some students and families. While we have not identified any threat to the safety of our students, staff, or school community, we believe it is in the best interest of our school community that the encampment be relocated away from campus.

I also want to clarify the facts and dispel any rumors or misinformation regarding the incident on Thursday August 27th, when an individual was arrested near our campus. At the time of the incident, I was in the lower yard (1st–3rd grade) with two members of North Bay Security. We observed an officer in foot pursuit of the individual, who walked past our school along the public easement toward the creek. At no time did this individual enter our campus, speak to, or interact with any of our students.

Both security staff and I immediately moved students away from the area. I blew my whistle, students lined up, and the arrest occurred away from our students. The incident was also captured on our school security cameras.

We are working closely with the Novato Police Department and other appropriate local partners to address the broader situation thoughtfully and respectfully. Our priority remains maintaining a safe, welcoming, and supportive learning environment for every student and family. We will continue to share factual and relevant updates as appropriate.
