Principal Message

Dear Families,
At our school, creating an environment where every student gets the exact academic, emotional, and social support they need to thrive is my highest priority. I want to share how our team is enhancing our support systems to better serve our students, along with ways you can get involved in our school community.

Aligning Our Support Systems (MTSS & COST) We are actively refining our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), which is the framework we use to coordinate academic, behavioral, and social-emotional care. Our greatest strength is our multidisciplinary team of specialists, including:
  • Academic Supports: Our Reading Interventionist, ELD Teacher/TOSA, and ELD Paraprofessional.
  • Mental Health & Student Services: Our General Education Counselor, Wellness Coach, and School Psychologist.
  • Instructional Leadership: Our classroom teachers, Special Education team, and school administration.

Through our collaborative Coordination of Services Team (COST) process, these specialists meet regularly to analyze student data, triage needs, and deliver targeted interventions so every student gets the right support at the right time.

Get Involved: SSC, ELAC, and PBIS Strong family partnership is vital to our students' success, and I invite you to collaborate with us. Many of our MTSS processes, system updates, and student progress data are shared directly during our School Site Council (SSC) and English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) meetings. I encourage all parents to attend, review data with us, and share your perspective.

Additionally, I am actively looking for parent representatives to join our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) team. PBIS is our school-wide framework for defining, teaching, and reinforcing positive behaviors, and having parents on this team ensures that our school climate reflects our shared community values.

Operational Updates to Campus Resources As part of our broader system updates, we are also making structural improvements to specific student resources. Currently, the Eagle’s Nest is temporarily under construction as we transition its function into a more systematic resource. While the Eagle’s Nest will continue to serve as a quiet, supportive alternative space during recess for mental health, problem-solving, and positive peer connection, we are establishing structured entry criteria and systematic tracking. Our Wellness Coach will document attendance and progress during these visits to ensure alternative recess opportunities directly support each student's growth goals.

I deeply appreciate your continued trust, partnership, and engagement as we build stronger, data-informed systems for all our students.

Warmly,

AnnaMaria Young
Principal

Counselor's Corner

¡Hola, familias de Rancho!
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be visiting our 3rd and 4th grade classrooms to teach practical strategies for preventing and handling bullying situations.
Here is a quick overview of what we’ll be covering together:

Bullying: What it is - and isn't

What exactly is bullying?
Bullying is formally defined as behavior consisting of:
(1) repeated actions or threats
(2) a power imbalance, and
(3) intention to cause harm

*For behavior to be considered bullying, all three components must be present.

What bullying is not:
  • Excluding someone (unless the exclusion is repeated and deliberate)
  • Disliking someone
  • Accidental physical harm (bumping into another, accidentally tripping them)
  • Being "bossy"
  • Telling a joke or saying unkind words
  • Arguments/difference in personality
If you suspect bullying:
  1. Take a deep breath. It can be distressing to hear that your child is struggling with another student, but rest assured, we are here and want to help.
  2. Get all the details. INCLUDING what part your child may be playing in the conflict. Conflict is rarely one-sided and it helps to get all the details upfront.
  3. Talk to your child’s teacher. Campus administration will certainly jump in when needed, but your child's teacher has the observations and insights needed to begin determining a solution
  4. Remain Calm. We take all concerns seriously and are here to help every step of the way. Together, we can ensure every student feels safe, valued, and heard.

How can the school counselor help?
  • Provide  short-term counseling services and support the victims and instigators.
  • Teach and reinforce appropriate skills for assertion and conflict resolution

Safety - Red Fire Lane

The red curbside is a Fire Lane.  Only use it for pickup and drop off when students can load/buckle themselves in and out on the CURBside.

Art and Garden Updates!

September in Art and Garden Class

This year's Art and Garden classes kicked off in September with K-5 and Rancho’s Special Day classes. Our first lessons covered lines and color and their importance in art. Ms. Amelia and Ms Stephanie talked about the color wheel and color mixing with the 3-5th graders. For the younger grades we read the picture book, “Mixed: A Colorful Story” by Arree Chung, then the students created their own unique thumbprint stamp portraits. We explored the Rancho garden as the season changes to Fall. Next month, we’ll discuss the artist Yayoi Kusama and explore some of her artwork.

We are looking forward to another fantastic year with our budding Rancho artists.

-Ms. Amelia and Ms. Stephanie.

Lost and Found

August - September Lost and Found will be bagged this week!

We have moved our Lost and Found to the front of the school. We will bag up any clothes left there at the end of the month.

After another month, we will donate the items left for 2 months.

We routinely check for names in clothing and water bottles and return directly to the child's classroom. Any clothing there now, is not labeled. Please remember to label your child's clothing and items so we can return them.

Thank you!

No Dogs Allowed on Campus

Friendly reminder - there are no dogs allowed on campus. Please do not bring a dog for pick up or drop off.

Picture Day!

Picture Day is October 13 and October 14, 2026

We need about 4 volunteers each day to help make sure classes arrive on time, stay in the order they need to be in, and help make sure student hair is combed and they look their best.

If you would like to volunteer either day for any amount of time, please contact Lisa Casey at lcasey@nusd.org.

Picture days run from about 8:45am to noon both days.

Thank you for volunteering!

Staff Parking Lot

All the parking spots labeled "Staff" are for staff only from 7:30 - 3:30. Please honor our staff by leaving them a spot to park, so they can being their work with your children. There are 6 unmarked spots near the entrance of the school for guests. Thank you!

Morning Walks

I've flipped the switch again, sorry for any confusion: students should keep their bags on and not go to their classrooms when they first arrive on campus (we had too many kids running in the halls, and touching other people's things.)

Please join your child for morning walk - families are welcome!

Students are supervised starting at 8:25 am.
