CALIFORNIA YOUNG READER NOMINATED Books

STATE WINNERS

Over the last several months, Rancho students have been busy reading books nominated by the California Young Reader Medal (CYRM) program which was started to encourage recreational reading of popular literature among the young people of our state. Since its inception in 1974, millions of California children and teens have helped to nominate, read, and vote for the California Young Reader Medal winning books.

RANCHO READERS CALLED IT!  THEY PICKED THE STATE WINNERS.

For Primary Picture Books the STATE winner is:                         Sam & Dave Dig a Hole by Mac Barnett

For  Picture Books for Older Readers the STATE winner is:    Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson

For Intermediate Chapter Books the STATE winner is:

Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein (He came to Rancho last year!)

THE MILLION WORD CLUB

Over 60 students have read more than one million words this year! A few students have read even more than 5 million words and beyond!  To celebrate this achievement, a Pizza Picnic is held in the garden east of the library (our new “outdoor” classroom).  There is food, a raffle, craft table, certificates awarded and a group picture is taken.  Qualifying students receive an invitation/reminder of the event.

The final date for taking AR tests in order to qualify is in the third week of May, so keep an eye out for the finalized date.  There are still many students that are closing in on One Million Words, so keep on reading.

We always need a few parents to help with the event, so if you have time and would like to be there, please email ([email protected]) or stop by the library.

SUMMER READING KEEPS YOU SMART!

The librarians from the Novato Public Library came to Rancho at the end of May to present their Summer Reading Program to all the Rancho Readers.

Please encourage your child to participate.  They will receive an Eagle Card next fall if they bring in their reading log during the first two weeks of school.

Barnes and Noble is also offering a free book if your child completes one of their reading logs and brings it in to a Barnes and Noble during the summer.  Information is available on the Rancho website with a link to the Barnes and Nobel website, or may be available from your child’s teacher.

Summer AR testing will be available at Rancho:  Dates TBA
